Job 25:1 – 42:16

Overview

Job and his 3 friends are continuing to ask why so many bad things have happened to him.  As each of them try and provide answers, it becomes apparent that nobody knows.  Job hears his friends say that that there is no hope for him.  He should just give up.  Job replies that he knows that God is great and powerful.  Job continues to claim his innocence before his friends and God.  He realizes that all of the collective wisdom of he and his friends does not compare to God and His wisdom.  Later in our reading we see Job wishing that he was back in the good old days when he was being blessed by God.  After stating his innocence and pleading for answers, God responds in chapter 38 verse 3 by saying “3 Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.”.  God asks Job where he was when God was laying the foundations of the earth. Later God asks Job “Does the rain have a father? Who fathers the drops of dew?”.  After some time God demands a response.  Job says “4 “I am unworthy—how can I reply to you?”  God continues pointing out how he orchestrates His Creation.  Job’s response is humility.  He admits that God can do anything he wants for whatever reason and not be stopped.  He concludes that he spoke without knowledge of things that are too wonderful to understand.  Job repents.  God then restores and doubles everything that Job had including his children.

Scripture Job 42:2-3

2 “I know that you can do all things;
no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.

Observation

Job has been through emotional and physical distress and yet he did not not curse God.  He did ask many questions of God and cried out for answers.  Finally, God responds to Job’s questions and clearly sets Job in his place.  While Job asked questions that seemed important to him, God asked Job questions that he was not capable of answering.  Job was humbled and ashamed.  He realized that God Almighty is “mightier” than he could have ever imagined and God’s knowledge is beyond Job’s understanding.

Application

Who can understand God and what he purposes for our lives?  He doesn’t want us to question his authority.  He wants us to humble ourselves and trust Him.   We need to remember that God is the “Almighty” who we should trust.  He is righteous and is truth.  Let God be our Lord and let’s trust him and his goodness in our lives.

Prayer

God I pray that I never doubt or question your authority.  While I might not understand why some things occur in my life, I will remember that you do care about me and love me even though I don’t deserve your love and cannot earned your love.
