Joshua 15:1 –  – Judges 3:27

Overview

Today’s reading through the Bible in 90 days brings us from Joshua into the book of Judges.  We see the land is divided up and distributed among the tribes of Israel. Some of the larger cities are set aside for the Levite priests who did not receive a portion of land, because of their duties.  The tribes  on the other side of the Jordan River that fought had now complete their mission and return to their land.  They built a memorial so that all of Israel will remember that they are part of the tribes even though they are on the other side of the Jordan.  At the end of the book of Joshua we read that Joshua dies and Joseph’s bones are buried.  In the book of Judges, we review some of the things that happened during the time of Joshua.  Now, without their leader, the Israelites consult the LORD for direction.  God answers and the Israelites attack and conquer Jerusalem.  Time goes by and two generations live and die.  The new generation does not know the Lord and they begin to worship false gods like baal.  Then, the Lord raises up Judges to fight for the Lord and rescue the people.

Baal Worship

Scripture – Judges 6:10 – 11

10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel. 11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals.

Observation

The promise land has become a reality, the land has been settled and now, two generations have passed since they crossed over the Jordan.  While Joshua was alive he led the people by Gods instruction and the people obeyed.  Now, in Judges, the people didn’t allow God to lead them and they obviously did not keep the practices and laws that He had commanded during their time in the wilderness.  Following God’s commands would have caused the people to recite the laws, memorize them, and practice the worship and rituals that were put in place while they were in the wilderness.   God was not first in their lives.  This generation did not know God or what had taken place in the past.  Instead, they did evil and served other gods.

Application

We are only 1 generation from being a Godless generation.  If we don’t share what God has done in our lives who will know?  If our lives don’t show the love of Christ through our actions, who will experience God’s love?  We are the hands and feet of Christ.  If we don”t love our fellow man, who will?  We need to read God’s word and burn it into our hearts so we can live those words in our lives and show Jesus to others.  If we don’t, who will learn about God’s unfailing love for us?  If we don’t share Christ with our children and then they grow up and raise families, what will they teach their children?

Prayer

Lord God allow me to show your love through my actions and words.  Help me to be your hands and feet to this generation.  Let my children see your love and read your words so that they can pass their faith to their children.
