2Chronicles 1:1 – 9:44

Overview

Our reading for today is from the book of 1Chronicles.  This book was written after the exile.  It covers the genealogies of the nation of Israel.  It begins with Adam and his family line and goes all the way through the 12 tribes of Israel.  It also includes the genealogy of King David as well as the priestly line of the Levites.  The history of the nation is documented from creation all the way through the exile.  While it is not very interesting reading, these writings were helpful for the Israelites who were coming out of captivity from the Babylonians.  They had been moved around and most likely separated from some of their families.  This confusion could cause the Israelites to not understand the journey they had been on with God as his chosen people.  This genealogy would help preserve their history and also provide details to those who would want to pieces back their families and tribes.

Scripture – 1Chronicles 6:31-32

31 These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the LORD after the ark came to rest there. 32 They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem. They performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them.

Observation

David was a man after God’s own heart.  He worshiped the Lord through prayer, offering, reading of the Word, dance and as we learn above, music.  Music was an important enough part of his devotion to God that he put many people in charge of it while he was king.  They were playing it in front of the tabernacle and tent of meeting.  Those locations were the center of worship for God’s people.

Application

We may sing songs at church as part of our Sunday services but do we really worship God in song?  David and other authors have written many psalms that were used to sing and worship our Lord.  As we devote ourselves to our Lord each day, we should fill our hearts with songs of worship.  As we are going though our day at school, work or at home, we can rejoice and worship God anytime with a song in our heart.

Prayer

Thank you Lord for your gift of music.  It moves my spirit and causes me to reflect on your glory.  Thank you for your Holy Word that we can put to music.
