Day6 – exodus  15:19 – 28:43

The Ten Commandments

Overview:
The Israelites have begun their new journey with God.  Immediately they find themselves dependent upon God for water & food.  God provides miracles and His people are satisfied.  While he does this, God instructs His people to only take what they need.  God also provided instructions for the Sabbath.  As the community begins to settle in, Moses finds himself governing the people and sitting as the judge over domestic & civil disputes.  Jethro (Moses Father-In-Law) provides good counsel and suggest that Moses delegate leaders to manage all of the easy cases and send the difficult ones for him to manage.  Moses meets with God and receives the 10 commandments.  These commandments along with domestic and civil laws are given out to the people.  God give detailed instructions how to build the Tabernacle.  Aaron and his sons are set apart as priests.

Observation
Our God is a god of order.  He is also a God of justice.  Our Lord instructs His people on how to live with people (His Creation).  This is an important step because he wants His people to worship Him in harmony and unity.  God provides instructions dealing with idols, altars, Hebrew servants, personal injuries, property, social responsibility, laws of justice and mercy and the sabbath laws.

Scripture Exodus 24:3
3 When Moses went and told the people all the LORD’s words and laws, they responded with one voice, “Everything the LORD has said we will do.” 4 Moses then wrote down everything the LORD had said.

Application
I can’t imagine what our civilization would be like without law and order.  God wanted His people to live in harmony so they could worship him in fellowship together.  He also wanted His people to have boundaries in life and know right from wrong and what was sin.  God wants us to live righteous lives without sin.  His rules help us to please him and live in fellowship with one another.  God wanted his people to know that there are consequences for our actions.

Prayer
Thank you, Lord, that you are a God of order.  Thank you for the boundaries you have established so we understand how to love our fellow man.  Help us to run from sin and follow your instruction.
