DC-3 Foam Cores

DC-3 Foam Cores

Another update on the DC-3.  The outer wing section has been made which now brings the DC-3 wingspan to a total of about 86″ (over 7 feet).  Foam cores were cut using the same airfoil profile I used (only enlarged) on both the P-51 and the P-47.  I am confident that the airfoil will be perfect for this aircraft.

Two hardwood spars were inserted into the wing panel before sheeting took place.  this not only strengthens the section but will also act as a guide and lock.  Each of the spars is long enough to slide and insert into the center section which will be held in place by tabs and a notch.  See the pictures and captions for more details about how this will work.

The wings were not fully sheeted to save weight.  Ailerons have been cut and will be hinged after covering the plane.  Servos will be mounted in each of the wing panels on the underside with external control rods.

The spar system itself is a pretty need system that aligns the panels and holds them together with no fear of them coming apart in flight.  The hardwood really does add strength.  Take a close look at the pictures of the spar and see how it works.
