1Kings 16:21 – 2Kings 4:37

Overview

Elisha watches Elijah taken up by GodAs foretold by God, the kingdom of Israel is divided.  There were many kings between the kingdoms and it is a bit confusing.  Elah, commander of the army was murdered by Zimri who made himself king but was killed because the troops wanted Omri instead.  Omri is later succeeded by Ahab who is identified by the writer as a wicked king.  Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him.  He married Jezebel and served Baal and worship him. He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria.  Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to arouse the anger of the LORD, the God of Israel, than did all the kings of Israel before him.  Elijah prophesied against Ahab and said that dogs will lick up his blood. This prophesy came true.  Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel and did evil in the sight of the Lord just like his father Ahab.  In the kingdom of Juda, Jehoshaphat, son of Asa becomes king and is a good king like his father.    Elijah the prophet is taken up to heaven as Elisha watches.  3 Kings are called by God to revolt against Israel.  Joram king of Israel in Samaria, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and the king of Edom to fight against Mesha, king of the Moabites.  Elisha hears from God and tells the 3 kings that they will defeat the Moabites and they do.  Later, Elisha being used by God raises a Shunammite woman’s son from the dead.

Scripture – 2Kings 2:8-9

9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.

Observation

Elijah the Tishbite, received the Word of the Lord and confronted Ahab and his wicked ways.  God had used him in a mighty way and others knew that God’s Spirit was with him.  Elisha was another prophet of God who knew Elijah and wanted to be by his side because.  God was about to take Elijah to be with him and the prophets new this including Elisha.  Our scripture today reveals that Elijah’s desire was to have even more of God’s Spirit in him so he could do mighty works in the name of the one true God.

Application

Is there someone you know who is such an example of Christ that you wish you were more like them?  I have met fellow followers of Christ whom I wished I had one of their qualities or a faith like they have.  Our correct response is to be like Christ.  We should desire to have more of His Spirit within us so we can show others a glimpse of God through the unconditional love and actions we display towards others.

Prayer

Father, strengthen me and use your Holy Spirit within my life to show your unconditional love to others.  Help me to become more like you each day.
