2Samuel 22:19 – 1Kings 7:37

Overview

Solomon Anointed King

Solomon Anointed King

David is getting up in years and he takes a census.    This action causes David to Sin against God.  Even though he confesses his sin to God he must pick between one of 3 punishments.  He allows God to pick and a plague killed over 70,000 people.  David pleads for mercy and God stops the plague.  While David is still king, Adonija, one of Davids older sons, tries to steal David’s throne.  David anoints Solomon as the new king and gives final encouragement and direction and then dies.  Solomon is firmly seated as the new king and he marries the Pharohs daughter.  He also exacts the Lords revenge on those who defied David during his reign.  Solomon asks God for wisdom and he is also granted wealth and a long life as long as he follows the commandments of God.  Hiram, king of Tyre continues his alliance with Israel and pledges trees for Solomon to make both the Temple of God as well as his palace.  Details of the temple and palace are written.   After 7 years, the Temple of God is finished

Scripture – 1Kings 3:8-9

8 “Your servant is in the midst of Your people which You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9 “So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

Observation

David has died and now Solomon has been given a huge responsibility to lead the nation of Israel.  David had a heart for God and faithfully lead for 40 years.   When Solomon is asked by God to “ask for anything”, he asks the Lord for wisdom and discernment so he can judge between good and evil.  He didn’t ask for money or fame, only an understanding heart.

Application

What we want and what God wants are usually two different things.  In the case of Solomon, he could have asked God for anything, long life, riches, or any other worldly desire but instead he asks the Lord for wisdom to lead.  When we pray to our Heavenly Father, many times we ask for things that are not important to God or his Kingdom.  Our prayer should be one of thanksgiving and praise.  When we do ask God for help, discernment should be at the top of our list.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the blessing of your Holy Word.  Thank you for the example that Solomon made when he asked for wisdom to lead.  Give me a discerning heart so I can lead and serve you.  Give me the patience, understanding and a loving heart for others.
