Psalms 109:1 – 134:3

Overview

Today’s reading included Psalms written by Moses, Solomon and David.  It is exciting to see each of the writers respond to God about circumstances in their lives and the national events that have influenced their country.  It seems that each day reading Psalms has revealed a treasure that stands out in the reading; Today was no exception.  While Psalms 119 stood out because of it’s length (took forever to read) Psalms 131 really spoke to me because of the busy lives many of us (including myself) lead.   This Psalm is not one I can say I live right now, but it is one I would desire to live.

Scripture Psalms 131

1 My heart is not proud, LORD,  my eyes are not haughty;  I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.   2 But I have calmed and quieted myself,  I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. 3 Israel, put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore.

Observation

Quiet Our HeartsDavid has achieved total contentment with the circumstances in his life.   He has not put himself above others in a “proud” sense.  He has put his total trust in God.  He does not concern himself with things that are out of his control or that he is not able to understand.  David has given those things over to God.   He has quieted his heart and humbled himself before God.   He describes himself as a weaned child.

Application

Most of us try and control every circumstance in our life.  Our Lord wants us to quiet our hearts and be satisfied with what He has provided for us.  While we desire for things that the world tells us we need, those who have been transformed by the saving grace of God should wean themselves from these things and ask God to satisfy our desires with the contentment only God can provide.  As we quiet our hearts and minds and focus on what is really important (our love for God), we will be more like David, not concerning ourselves with things that are out of our control or beyond our understanding.  God wants us to trust him completely.  He wants us to put our hope in Him now and forever.

Prayer

Father quite my heart and mind.  Help me to put all of my worries and busyness behind me and listen to your voice.  I place my hope in trust in you alone.
